Alexander nasceu em Minsk, Bielorrússia, mas mudou-se aos 5 anos para Oslo. Aprendeu a tocar violino desde pequeno e em 2006 ganhou a competição de talentos da noruega Kjempesjansen (The Big Break) com a sua composição jazz, Foolin.
Em 2009 ganhou o Eurovision Song Contest para a Noruega com a canção Fairytale. Na altura, obteve a maior pontuação de sempre no concurso. A canção acabou por ser lançada em 25 países.
